If a tooth is decayed, fractured, or injured, the nerve may be affected. In the event this is not treated, an abscess is likely to form.
Not treating an abscess as soon as possible can result in severe discomfort, tooth loss, and sinus infections.
In order to prevent reinfection, root canal treatment cleans and fills the canals to alleviate the discomfort permanently.
Root canal therapy is indicated by a number of signs including darkening of the tooth after trauma, severe discomfort from an infection or a deteriorating nerve.
Various diagnostic tests and x-rays will be performed when you visit the dentist to see whether root canal treatment is necessary. All treatment options and procedures will be discussed with you in detail during your consultation.
Typically, two to three treatment sessions are required for this routine procedure.
The first step is to clean and shape the root canals inside the tooth to remove bacteria and decay, and then to apply an antibiotic dressing and temporary filling.
Upon settling for a suitable period of time, the infected tooth will need a second visit to be filled with a permanent filling.
A significant amount of relief is achieved after the first visit for most patients.
